Our Visitors from around the world

The following two links are to programs during this month-long celebration.
Students who met their AR reading goals were treated to a real high tea in the library. Students got to dress up to attend. Students learned about the custom of high tea and its origins in England. They practiced manners and poured for each other. One mom had even made hand-dipped strawberries -- there were cloths on the tables and it was quite elegant!

The concluding activity for the month was a day when students shared within their grade levels what they had learned. Then they came to the Gym to visit the countries represented there. We had Kenya, Congo, Egypt, Pakistan, India, China, Mexico, Ireland, and Peru. Many parents participated blessing us with wonderful artifacts and stories about their homelands! This link gives you a sense of what that event was like. http://smilebox.com/playEmail/4d544d304d4441344d7a68384d6a63314d7a55334d6a4d3d0d0a&sb=1

We used materials and ideas from the National Geographic -- http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geography-action/
Vanderbilt University's International Student Union contributed flags for each of the countries AND students who were willing to visit with the children....and in return they received a free meal in our FABULOUS Cafeteria! Scarritt Benet Center also provided help since they have a city-wide celebration of cultures!

Each child received a suitcase (brown bags samped with travel stamps), and their own passports for stamping. Each of the countries represented by people from that country in the gym had something special to put in their baggage (a souvenir).

Mexico - serape bookmarks -- Our Mexican moms made 400 of these by cutting a serape into bookmark sized pieces and hand finnishing them!
China - Red Envelopes -- purchased via the Internet -
Pakistan/India - Henna tattoo transfers -- Zazzle.com had these unusual items.
Peru - My Wonderful World Tattoos -- National Geographic - sent these.
**Egypt** - Arabic Alphabet and writing my name in Arabic laminated practice cards
Ireland - learning a step dance --
Africa - Playing African Instruments -- borrowed from the Board of Discipleship -- music division across from Scarrit Bennet.
